I put in 2 double workouts days (Monday – Barre and 5 mile run, Tuesday – 4.36 mile run and NTC) last week.
Tuesday’s 4 miler was a fun run with Nike Running and some of my fellow runners at NTC Lincoln Park. We did a short 2.5 mile run along Lakeshore to their hotel. Nike offered to take us back to NTC in a trolley, but all of us decided to run back to the store. Then some of us went straight to NTC class for some cross training. Boy, that’s a tough workout. I was so hungry and happy that we were served fruit after our workout. Next we had our team huddle and listened to tips about injury prevention from Athletico. It was really useful and got some pamphlets for stretching and strengthening our hips and legs.
Last Wednesday, we began the Nike Get Fly Program. It was a lot of fun. Nike put together this program to promote their new shoes – Flyknit Frees and to help you decrease your mile/min. They gave us a training program to follow, which I will incorporate into my marathon training. My friends and I formed 2 teams of 4 runners – 312 Road Runners and Run Chi Fly 26.2. All together 20 teams are part of this. Then on 8/28, all teams will meet again and see if we improved our time.
I took the Armitage bus down to Lincoln Park and did a warm up run to Navy Pier, which was about 3 miles. I can’t run a mile straight out fast. One of my teammates backed out last minute but we managed to get a last minute fill in. When we arrived, they had a DJ going and offered bottles and Gatorade. Also we had the opportunity to try the Nike Flyknit Free, which fit on my feet like a sock. I don’t run in Nike Frees, so I was interested in trying them out.
Once everyone checked in, we did a short 1 mile warmup to Lakeshore Park where the track is located. They separated the teams into 2 heats. Both of our teams are part of Heat 1. My team, 312 Road Runners, put together our lineup – Karina, Reuben, Me, and Ben. This “track meet” was set up to be a 4×1 mile relay. Each runner had to do 4 laps around the track and at the end of the 4th lap, we had to tag the next runner. While I was waiting for my turn, I did some stretches and cheered fellow runners on. Then once Reuben was on his final lap, I waited for my turn and put on the jets. I ran at a fast comfortable pace. Enough I wasn’t laboring for breath or felt like legs were collapse. Also it was very motivating to hear people cheering me on. Once I was in the middle of my last lap, I decided to turn push myself to the finish line. My final time – 7:06 min/mile! Yeah! This is my fastest mile ever (at least that I know of). Our team time was 30:25. Once we were finished, we ran another mile back to Navy Pier. We took it easy and enjoyed the night view of the city. There was lightening also, which made the night sky pretty but we were somewhat concerned about the rain. Luckily we missed getting rained on when we decided to get inside and walk. Most of those running in Heat 2 got soaked.
Once we got back to our rooftop party, the DJ was spinning and beer and appetizers were being served. Despite the rain, the fireworks show at the Navy Pier still went on. It was really cool to see lightening and fireworks lighting up the sky at the same time. Also it turned out that if you were wearing Flyknit Frees with a bead on it, then you got to keep the shoes! Unfortunately I wasn’t one of those runners. Overall it was fun night.
By the end of the month, I hope I can run a 6:30 min/mile. Any less, I would be thrilled even more.
Thursday and Friday – Rest Day. Mainly due to work, but my legs were feeling it after running 3 days straight. Also I wanted to rest my legs because we were running 13.1 miles on Saturday.
Saturday – Long 13.1 run with the marathon crew. I had a feeling this one was going to drain me because the last of couple nights I haven’t sleeping much. However, I did manage to run 9:36 min/mile most of the way. Next week is 14 miles!
Sunday – 3 mile run. This is the first time I ever ran with my boyfriend who is just getting into running. He usually does the stationary bike, weights, and running on the treadmill during the week and every Saturday he runs for 30 minutes while I’m out running. It was nice to go out together early in the morning.
